Is Your Love of Chocolate Healthy?

“A recent study finds an association between consuming chocolate and having a significantly lower risk of being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart condition that involves an irregular heartbeat. But — sorry, chocaholics — it’s yet to be proven that eating the sweet stuff will actually help you avoid AFib.” – Cleveland Clinic

The study found that those who ate chocolate in moderate amounts had the lowest risk for AFib. Unfortunately, the link is small. There are many unknowns with the data. Consensus with doctors show that there is an interest in the benefits of cocoa, but no clear evidence. The sugar and fat content of chocolate may even cancel out the benefits. However, there is evidence that exercise and diet to maintain a healthy weight is effective in reducing AFib complications. In the end, moderation is key, treat yourself well!
